L∞-stability of Continuous Shock Waves in a Radiating Gas Model∗

L∞-STABILITY OF CONTINUOUS SHOCK WAVES IN A RADIATING GAS MODEL∗ MASASHI OHNAWA† Abstract. In the present article, we study the asymptotic stability in L∞-topology of shock waves in a model system of radiating gases. It is known that the system admits discontinuous shock waves if the shock strength is strictly above a threshold value of √ 2, while if it is below (subcritical case) or equal to (...

Shock Profiles for Non Equilibrium Radiating Gases

We study a model of radiating gases that describes the interaction of an inviscid gas with photons. We show the existence of smooth traveling waves called ’shock profiles’, when the strength of the shock is small. Moreover, we prove that the regularity of the traveling wave increases when the strength of the shock tends to zero.

On Shock Waves in Solids

This paper describes some recent theoretical results pertaining to the experimentally-observed relation between the speed of a shock wave in a solid and the particle velocity immediately behind the shock. The new feature in the present analysis is the assumption that compressive strains are limited by a materially-determined critical value, and that the internal energy density characterizing th...

Shock waves on complex networks

Power grids, road maps, and river streams are examples of infrastructural networks which are highly vulnerable to external perturbations. An abrupt local change of load (voltage, traffic density, or water level) might propagate in a cascading way and affect a significant fraction of the network. Almost discontinuous perturbations can be modeled by shock waves which can eventually interfere cons...

Shock Waves

Shock wave theory was first studied for gas dynamics, for which shocks appear as compression waves. A shock wave is characterized as a sharp transition, even discontinuity in the flow. In fact, shocks appear in many different physical situation and represent strong nonlinearity of the physical processes. Important progresses have been made on shock wave theory in recent years. We will survey th...
